What is HSMV 82050 and why it matters
HSMV 82050 — "Notice of Sale and/or Bill of Sale for a Motor Vehicle, Mobile Home, Off-Highway Vehicle or Vessel" — is Florida's official record of a private-party sale. It does two jobs at once:
- Notice of Sale (protects the seller). Filing it with your county tax collector puts the sale date on state record. Until the buyer applies for a new title, the vehicle legally hangs in limbo — toll violations, red-light tickets, even liability can chase the last titled owner. The filed notice is your shield.
- Bill of Sale (protects both parties). The same form records the price, date, odometer reading and both signatures — the receipt of the transaction the buyer uses for titling and tax.
