When you transfer a registered sled, the agency wants proof of the sale; when the sled isn't registered (barn finds, out-of-season sales, vintage machines), the bill of sale is often the only ownership record in existence. Either way, a signed bill of sale is what makes the deal real.

For sellers there's a second reason: trail violations and accidents. If the buyer rides the sled before re-registering it, your signed, dated bill of sale is what proves the machine was no longer yours.

What to include in a snowmobile bill of sale

Both parties — full names and addresses of seller and buyer.
Sled description — year, make, model (e.g. Ski-Doo MXZ 600, Polaris Indy), engine size, and color.
VIN — usually on a plate or decal on the right side of the tunnel near the footrest, or stamped into the tunnel; older sleds may carry it under the hood on the bulkhead.
Miles — record the odometer reading to document condition on the sale date. (Federal car-style odometer disclosure doesn't apply, but writing it down protects both sides.)
Price, date, payment method — the actual figures.
As-is clause — used sleds sell as-is; say so explicitly so a blown belt in January doesn't become your problem in court.
Registration status — note the registration number if current, or state that registration has lapsed.
Signatures on both copies — plus notarization where the state expects it.

Does this work for a sled sold with a trailer?
