Selling a trailer in Texas — what to know
Texas splits trailers into two worlds. Lighter utility trailers (at or under 4,000 lbs gross weight) don’t require a title — they only need registration to be towed on public roads, handled at your county tax assessor-collector office. Heavier trailers, and any trailer the owner chooses to title voluntarily, go through the normal TxDMV title process. In both cases the county office will want proof of how you got the trailer — and for a non-titled trailer, a signed bill of sale is that proof.
For private sales, put the gross weight or empty weight on the document if you know it: it determines whether the buyer’s county asks for a title transfer or just a registration receipt. Farm trailers and homemade trailers have their own registration lanes in Texas, but the bill of sale requirement is the same — the county wants to see who sold it, to whom, when, and for how much.
Texas rules at a glance
| Topic | Texas rule |
|---|---|
| Title required? | Not for most trailers at or under 4,000 lbs gross weight — registration only. Heavier trailers are titled through TxDMV. |
| Where to register | Your county tax assessor-collector office. |
| Notarization | Not required in Texas — signatures of both parties are enough. |
| Sales tax | Collected by the county at registration/title transfer, based on the price on your bill of sale. |
| Homemade trailers | Need a weight certificate and a county inspection lane before first registration — the bill of sale (or a statement of how it was built) starts that process. |
